Introduction
The Petaluma Wind Gap (Petaluma Gap) resides at the southern end of the Sonoma Coast AVA in Sonoma County, California. Comprised of a northwest-southeast running valley that offers a break in the California Coastal Range, the Petaluma Gap funnels cool pacific air and fog over southern Sonoma County.
During the growing season mornings in the Petaluma Gap are shrouded in fog. Morning fog usually gives way to sunshine around mid-morning and cool ocean breezes develop in the early afternoon. As the afternoon progresses in the Petaluma Gap fog once again encroaches on the local vineyards, pushed inland from the cold Northern California Pacific Ocean by a constant sea breeze.
Encompassing roughly 320 square miles, the Petaluma Gap is not an official AVA but a region within the Sonoma Coast AVA that is quickly becoming known for producing world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Today over 40 vineyards call the Petaluma Gap home and supply fruit to some of the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producers in Sonoma County.
